 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Three toed box turtle

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Other members of the genus Terrapene

Sexing and Characteristics:

Male three toed box turtles have red heads, bright scales on the legs, re-orange eyes, long tails, and slightly concave plastron. Females have yellow-brown eyes, stubby tails, and a flat plastron.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

I recommend reptibark, because it makes high humidity, and that’s vital for this turtle. Also, use a reptirock water dish, should be large enough, so the turtle can wade and soak. CLEAN THE BOWL IF THE TURTLE DEFECATES IN THE WATER.

Lighting and UVB:

Use a UVB/UVA lamp. This will help to synthesy Vitamin D3, which is calcium.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Temperature should range 80-85F. The humidity should be between the 70-100%. Use a thermometer and a humidity gauge.

Heating and Equipment:

If the winters in your area are cold, use an Undertank Heater(UTH), so the turtle will not pass cold during the winter days. Put a hide box, so the turtle would sleep at night.

Caging Provided:

You can use either a reptile aquarium or build an outdoor pen. The minimum size for an adult box turtle would be a 20-gallon, but larger is better. The outdoor pen should be 4ft times 4ft. Only use the outdoor pen if the weather allows you.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

These turtles are omnivorous. Feed apples, strawberries, blackberries, pears, bananas, plums, watermelons, cantaloupe, and tomatoes. Feed veggies like romaine lettuce, carrots, corn, green beans, and peas. Animal food such as crickets, grasshoppers, earthworms, snails, slugs, crawfish, toadlets, and beetles.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Use calcium and multi-vitamin powder.

Maintenance:

Clean the cage every 6 months, or as needed.

Some Words on this Species:

This are the most outgoing turtles you could have. Buy only captive-bred turtles, because they are healthier, docile, and adaptable. TURTLE RULES!!!!!!!!!!
