Snakes

Sub Category:

Venomous Snakes

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Tommy

Years Experience:

10 to 15 Years

Species:

Osage Copperhead

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

All copperheads.

Sexing and Characteristics:

Females are larger than males. Males have longer tails then females as well.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

I would recomend news paper and indoor outdoor carpet because it is too dangerous to go throught and try to find a venomous snake in thick dense substrates like aspen and cypress mulch. But what ever you do dont use pine or ceder as it is deadly to all snakes.

Lighting and UVB:

None

Temperatures and Humidity:

Moderate humidity is required. Temps in the high 70’s to mid 80’s work well.

Heating and Equipment:

Under tank heaters or heat tape work the best! if you need cheap good heat tape go to www.Bigappleherp.com its great stuff.

Caging Provided:

I would house adults in nothing less than a 40 gallon long and wide. You need room to work with them they are short and stocky remember. Babies need to be house in a 10 gallon aquarium. I would recomend using a divider in your cage.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

These guys can be a pain to get feeding if they are wild caught animals. You should always feed them mice if they will take them and perfuribly pre killed mice and always use feeding tongs to keep from getting bitton. There will be a higher chance of a bad bite if its during a feeding response!!!!!!!!

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

None

Maintenance:

These guys over all should not be kept by the enexperienced herper!!!!!! They are low maintenance animals as long as you are carefull.

Some Words on this Species:

DO NOT GET THEM BECAUSE YOU THINK THEY ARE COOL!!!!!!!!! A BITE MY NOT BE FATAL BUT IT HURTS LIKE ALL HECK AND YOUR INSURANCE MY NOT WANT TO COVER A HOSPITAL BILL THAT RANGES FROM $10,000 TO $150,000.
