Years Experience:

Over 20 Years

Species:

Leopard Gecko

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

N/A

Sexing and Characteristics:

Sexing Leopard geckos is quite easy when they are fully matured. Males weill habe small bulges at the start of their tails and the’y have a more visible v-shaped line of pores. Female will have hardly visible pores. It is almost impossible to sex a gecko that is not at least four months, without a 10x microscope.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

The best substrate is newspaper or paper toweling. But for older geckos, fine granular snad works well and is quite attractiuve but becarefull, sand may cause impaction, so be sure to supply your gecko with daily calcium. I would not recommend desert snow. Give fresh water daily. And use bottled water- DO NOT USE TAP WATER!

Lighting and UVB:

A 75 watt basking spot lamp will be fine during the day and just a 75 watt night glo bulb foir night.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Your terrarium should have a cool side of about 75 Degrees F and a warm side of 85 degrees F. Humidity should be about 50 to 70 percent. Be sure to have a thermometer and a humidity guage.

Heating and Equipment:

I would recommend a repti-therm under tank heater and a basking spot lamp. Keep all heating equipment on one side of the terrarium. Also providse a water dish, two food dishes, two or more hides.

Caging Provided:

A 20 gallon minimun for two geckos. At least a 15 gallon for one gecko. And a secure screen top. I use all glass tanks. Most heating devices are almost impossible to use with plastic or screen terrariums.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

I use mealworms, silkworms, crickets and waxworms as a diet. Be sure to give your gecko more than one food type. I sugest at least two or three.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Be sure to give your leopard gecko daily powder calcium and everyother day powder multivitamins. Dust the food and supply a small dish of just calcium powder.

Maintenance:

Clean terrarium with boiling water once or twice a month. Clean hides and dishes once a week, clean water dish daily.

Some Words on this Species:

Leopard geckos are very good beginner pets and are usually friendly, altough some albinos or stressed geckos will snap- but it shouldn’t hurt much.
