Main Category:

Lizards

Sub Category:

Geckos: Golden

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Lizarddude180

Years Experience:

1 to 2 Years

Species:

Golden Gecko

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Tokay Gecko

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males have little pores down their legs and little knobs of flesh at the base of their tail.

Mostly Active During:

N/A

Substrate and Water Needs:

If you can get a type of substrate that holds moisture without making pools of standing water, use it. If you can’t come by that, you can use just about anything as long as it isn’t pine or cedar shavings. It really holds parasites and the fumes can make your lizard sick. Provide a large water dish for humidity and mist the cage several times a day.

Lighting and UVB:

No UVB required.
I use a 50 watt bulb and provide 14 hours in the summer and gradually drop the length down to 10 hours in the winter.

Temperatures and Humidity:

75 min. and 86 max. Humidity should be at least 60%.

Heating and Equipment:

I use a 50 watt bulb and a heat mat that is placed on the bottom of the tank. The pad is not needed unless your plants require special care.

Caging Provided:

I have my mating pair in a 30 gal. tall and my lone male in a 20 gal. long. 25% of the original size should be added for each additional Gecko.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

They will take just about anything that moves. Crickets, grasshoppers, pinky mice, roaches, & moths. Just don’t feed them beetles and mealworms. The hard shells can cut them and cause internal bleeding.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I dust the crickets every week when pinkys aren’t available.

Maintenance:

Clean up the droppings when seen and mist the cage several times daily.

Some Words on this Species:

These animals don’t like to be handled and will bite when they feel threatened. Otherwise they are a great pet that will last you several years when cared for properly.
