Years Experience:

1 to 2 Years

Species:

Kenyan Sand Boa

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Rough Scaled Sand Boa
Anetherystic Kenyan Sand Boa
Rosy Boa

Sexing and Characteristics:

Male have spurs on each side of their vent. Females are larger than males. These snakes love to burrow and are very shy.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

I use aspen bedding for my pair of Kenyans. But you can mix some playsand or calcium sand. You have a risk of impaction if you use sand at all. Alot of people use crushed walnut shells. You may think Hmmmm, they are sand boas they only need a little water, they are desert animals. Don’t make the same mistake I did. Keep a water bowl in there at all times.

Lighting and UVB:

Kenyans need a nocturnal heat lamp so they can have a desert temperature. No Uv light is needed.

NEVER USE A HEAT MAT!!!

Temperatures and Humidity:

Sand boas need a hot side and a cool side.
Hot side: Constant 90-95
Cool side: Days-80 Nights-70

Heating and Equipment:

The only thing you need is a heat lamp.

Caging Provided:

For my pair of kenyans I have a 30 gallon breeder.
A male can live in a 10 gallon but for a temp gradient get a 20long
A female in a 20long

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

An appropriate size mouse weekly but a few weeks without food is alright.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I don’t use any.

Maintenance:

Clean the cage once you see feces or every two weeks

Some Words on this Species:

These snakes are extremely docile. You will have fun watching them disappear into the substrate. I recommend them for first time snake.
