 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

1 to 2 Years

Species:

Golden Gecko

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Tokay Gecko

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males have a larger tail base, fleshy knobs on the base of their tail, and pores along the insides of their legs.
Females have none of the above.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

Use a type of substrate that holds moisture well to help with humidity. Do not use cedar or pine shavings because some of the gasses they give off can cause respiratory problems.
Mist the cage several times daily because they don’t like to drink from a bowl.

Lighting and UVB:

Use regular 40-60 watt bulbs in a heat lamp depending on the size of their cage.
No UVB required but it helps in digestion.

Temperatures and Humidity:

76-86F during the day and 65-75F at night.
Humidity should be at least 60%.

Heating and Equipment:

Use a single heat lamp and an under-tank heat pad to keep the substrate warm and create humidity.

Caging Provided:

I have provided a 30 gal. tall for my mating pair. This is the minimum for two adult geckos. 15% of the original space provided should be added for each additional female.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Basically any insect small enough for them to swallow.
Crickets, grasshoppers, moths, roaches, flies, etc.
Don’t give the very many mealworms or superworms because the hard shells are hard to digest and can cut their insides and cause internal bleeding. Don’t offer too many waxworms either because they are too high in fat.
Mashed up banana or pured baby food will be taken sometimes.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Dust their meal every other feeding because these animals need quite a lot of calcium.

Maintenance:

Clean up droppings when you see them and remove any left over feeder insects when they are full.

Some Words on this Species:

These animals don’t really like to be handled and will bite if they feel that they are in danger.
