Sexing and Characteristics:

As for most aquatic turltles including the snapper the females are generaly larger than the males. The length of common snappers exceeds one foot, the record length is 18 ½ inches. The average adult weight is thirty pounds, but 40-60 pounders are not uncommon. Snappers grow fast, about 2 - 4 inches in a year. The average life span is about 30-40 years. As all snapper turtles, they are very agressive, and very dirty. The common snapper has a brownish black appearance,a rigid ruff shell, and have a very distinctive hooked beak. There tales become about 1/2 there body length snapper turtles are highly aquatic and need room to swim.

Substrate and Water Needs:

15-20 gallons per inch. The water level should be deep enough for the turtle to swim comfortably, at least as deep as the length of the shell. substrate is not needed, if you choose to use a substrate i recomend clean potting soil, but it will turn to mud and make cleaning the tank much more difficult, dont use anything that is hard or ruff because it could injure the under belly of the turtle and create painful sores.

At the least 12-14 hours of uvb lighting

65-75 degrees

You will need a pretty big filter to keep up with you snapper turtle, as they are very dirty.

Description of Diet:

Night crawlers, meal worms, crayfish, crickets, pinkies and minnows are a few choices.

N/A

Maintenance:

Not high on maintenance,except for changing the water at least once a week.

Very aggresive, be careful when feeding because when they are big enough they could very well take a finger off.
