 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Colt2002

Years Experience:

5 to 10 Years

Species:

Ocellated Skink

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

N/A

Sexing and Characteristics:

I only know what I have read and that is that the males head tends to be wider then the female but as I only have one I really do not know.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

A shallow water bowl should be provided and changed daily. This bowl should be big enough that the skink can get in and out easily.

Lighting and UVB:

All skinks require ultraviolet lighting to maintain good health 12 hours of daylight 12 hours of nightlight. (these lights will also help with the temperatures)

Temperatures and Humidity:

Daytime temp should be between 75 and 90 degrees, nighttime should be between 65 and 75 degrees with a basking spot that maintains temp between 95 and 100 degrees. Humidity should be mixed with dry and moist areas of the cage, you can do this with the water bowl, sand or a reptile bedding that looks like compressed peat moss brick.

Heating and Equipment:

I use heat lamp bulbs in my hood I have a dual switch I have a daylight bulb & a night light bulb. I also have a heat rock. Depending on the size of your tank you may want a under tank heater or heat lamps. I would set up your cage or new cage and get the perfect temps before you place you skink in its new home.( all cages are not the same)

Caging Provided:

I have a 27 gallon fish tank with a dual light hood about 3 inches of playground sand and a compressed peat moss like bedding that I got at the pet store this stuff is kinda pricey but my skink sure likes it then I have a thin layer of smooth small white pebble rocks on the surface. (have had no health problems) I also have a large rock for it to bask on and a hollow log for a hiding area but my skink prefers to hide underground peaking out.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

Crickets, mealworms, earthworms, super worms & wax worms also offer veggies & fruits is recommended. Some suggested veggies are kale, collard greens, legumes, carrots, squash, & berries. Also High quality low fat cat or dog food (wet food) Adults should be feed 3 to 4 times per week at least, Juveniles can be fed 2 times a day while growing.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I use Rep-cal (calcium with VIT.D) powder to dust all insects and I also put Reptosol Liquid vitamins in the water. Follow directions on the containers.

Maintenance:

I have found of all the critters we have this on is the easiest pickup the droppings that you see around the cage do not leave food in cage for more then 6 hours for heat reason unless its alive. and fresh clean water everyday. make sure your temps are correct and your bulbs are working properly. That’s about all.

Some Words on this Species:

My kids love feeding and watching our skink but I have been told that it is not good to handle them to often if they are not tame(some are very tame and this is not a problem) due to the fact that their skin is very sensitive and can be damaged easily.
