Main Category:

Lizards

Sub Category:

Alligator Lizards

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Anonymous

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Southern Alligator Lizard

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Northern Alligator Lizard

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males tend to have wider heads then females do. Females also sometimes are a little larger.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

Dirt, mulch, or bark are a good substrate as Alligator lizards like to bury themselves. Don’t use gravel as it may be ingested and cause intestinal blockage. As far as water mine like a large, not too deep water area for soaking, and drinking. Alligator lizards can and will swim too.

Lighting and UVB:

I have just used a standard reptile light for mine

Temperatures and Humidity:

I would recommend a temperature of around 75 degrees. The humidity in my tank is about 65.

Heating and Equipment:

Ive never used special heating but it wouldn’t hurt, just DON’T use heat rocks as it tends to burn most reptiles.

Caging Provided:

Mine are in a seventy gallon tank with one-third shallow water.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Crickets, meal-worms or any other small insect.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Calcium wouldn’t hurt to be used occasionally.

Maintenance:

Pretty easy. Just clean the cage out when it looks dirty.

Some Words on this Species:

Alligator lizards tend to be aggressive and bite so I wouldn’t recommend this as a children’s animal. But overall I feel they are a good hardy species.
