Years Experience:
1 to 2 Years
Species:
Long-Tailed Grass Lizard
Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:
N/A
Sexing and Characteristics:
Males have a slight bulge where the tail begins.Females have no bulge.Females also tend to be a more dull color than males.
They are very fragile creatures so try not to hold them very often, but if you do pick them up,be very gentle with them. They are known for they’re extremely long tail, which can grow up to 10 inches long.
Mostly Active During:
Day
Substrate and Water Needs:
They love to burrow,so for the substrate,I suggest using wood chips that are specially made for reptiles. For the water dish, you can use a small butter tub or go to a pet store to buy a water dish.
Lighting and UVB:
A UVB Light is necessary for the lizard to properly absorb and process vitamins and minerals.A Flood Light will brighten up the lizards habitat, but is not necessary.Be sure to change the bulb every 6 months or so,because the bulb will lose it’s UVB rays after that time.
Temperatures and Humidity:
The temperatures should be around 80-88 degrees and should never get below 60 degrees.I do not currently know what the humidity should be.
Heating and Equipment:
I do not recommend using an underground heating pad,as the lizard might electrocute itself if it burrows too deep and it receives plenty of heat from the UVB Light and the Flood Light.Be sure to have a hide area for the lizard,so that it does not overheat.
Caging Provided:
A 10-15 gallon tank is good for a single Long-Tailed Lizard and if you are going to keep two in one cage, then I suggest using at least a 20 gallon tank. They are very aggressive and territorial,so only put a male and a female or a female and another female together,as they will fight if there are two males in one tank.
Diet:
Carnivorous
Description of Diet:
You can feed them small crickets.A good rule to go by is to feed the lizard crickets that are smaller than its head.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
I don’t use any,but if you want to,you can buy vitamin powder and dust it on the crickets before you feed them to the lizard. If you do this, only do it once or twice a week.
Maintenance:
Cleaning the tank once every one or two weeks is fine, but be sure to change the water daily.
Some Words on this Species:
Long-Tailed Lizards are fun pets to have and are also pretty easy to take care of.They are,in my opinion, one of the best beginner pets, second only to the Green Anole.
