Male Chuckwallas are larger and have larger heads than females do.Females have small, narrow heads.Males also have a swelling or bump at the base of the tail that females do not.
Mostly Active During:
Day
Substrate and Water Needs:
For the substrate, you can use Bed-A-Beast work good.Do not use sand,as it can cause impaction.Impaction is when your lizard swallows some sand and it gathers in its intestines. It can be fatal.
A water dish should be put in the encloser. You can buy one from a petstore or use a butter tub.Mist the tank every few days too.
Lighting and UVB:
Chuckwallas require a Full Spectrum UV Light.Be sure to change the bulb every 6 months as it willl lose its UV part of the spectrum.
Temperatures and Humidity:
The temperature should be 90-95 degrees and should have a basking area where it is 100 degrees. It should also have a cool area that is 80-85 degrees.
Heating and Equipment:
Heating rocks should not be used because they can burn your lizards belly.Underground heating pads are not necessary.
Be sure to have plenty of hiding spots for your lizard to cool down in.
Caging Provided:
The phrase ’’the bigger the better’’ is corrrect in this case.A large costom made encloser is best and it should be filled with rocks to hide under and bask on.It should also have tree branches in it and good soil to dig in.
If you want to have an indoor encloser, than it should be a 30-50 gallon tank.

Chuckwallas are mostly plant and fruit eating lizards. They will eat carrots, green beans, peas, lettus, squash, dandelions, mustard greens, and other such vegetables. They also like fruits such as grapes, kiwi, apples, strawberries, cactus, and mangos. They will eat insects like crickets, beetles, and mealworms too.

If you have the Chuckwalla inside, you can dust Repcal calcium that had D3 on the crickets before you feed them to the lizard. If it is outside, then just give it Repcal calcium without the D3.
