Years Experience:

Under 1 Year

Species:

Leopard Geckos

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

N/A

Sexing and Characteristics:

To tell from male and female, males have pores shaped like a V and also has budgesright at the sides from the beigining of its tail. Males will also lick the air to see if is everything is alright for the female. Maturity reaches after 1 year so if you plan on breeding than wait for 1 year and make sure she is the right weight of grams too.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

The substrate should always be Carpet (repti-carpet), Jungle mix, Bed-a-beast ect. If you have sand, wood chips ect. than you have to take it out because it will eat it and have an impaction so make sure you make the substrate non-atable and non-toxic. You also need a water dish and refill it every 2 days so it can have nic fresh water. You cannot mist a plant every day because it will dehidrate and not get that much liquid.

Lighting and UVB:

I use a light that gives heat to my leos, dont buy a light that wont give heat, buy one that does because leos like that. Never put your tank near a window for lighting because it can be to cold and might die so you should always have a nice warm light there for the leo.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Leos should have a hot side and a cool side of the tank. The warm side should be 85 to 90F and the cool side can be 75 to 80F. Humidity should be low, and you should not mist/spray the cage at all. The hides should be misted all the time but never the cage.

Heating and Equipment:

Heat mats work the best, just buy one and stick it under the tank and the heat mat should work good. Other stuff for heating can be heat tape, a heat lamp, heater and a heat bulb. Heat bulbs should be the colour of red, blue and black.Leos do not need a basking spot, so a basking lamp is not required, although it does not hurt if temperatures are kept correct. You should never ever use a heat rock, u may use it for diffrent reptiles but it will hurt and burn tyour gecko so this is not recomeneded.

Caging Provided:

An adult male should be housed in a 10 gallon terrarium and a baby may be housed in a 5 gallon but if you just got babies from a pregnant female than you can house all of them in a 10 gallon. Leopard geckos should have 1-2 hides in there (1 moist, 1 not) some hiding spots, plants ect. But never put anyhting in there that would be toxic. The substrate for the hides can be moss (not from backyard) and other substrate that is soft. If your female has just laid eggs than you can use the substrate (for the incubator) perlite or verumlite. These types of substare is for plants and is highy recomended. If you are planning on breeding than you should have a laying box in there because if there isnt one in there she will die from the eggs still in there. The eggs should be in a tupperwear container with everything it needs in there like a heating sorce, heating light and ect. Make sure to never turn the eggs because if they get turned the babies will drown and it would be pretty much a waste of time. So remeber to get everything you need for adults and babies.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

The leos main diet should be crickets and should be dusted off with calcium (repti-cal), just get a cricket, put it in the container with the calcium and shake it, than take it out and feed it to your leo. Now treats for your leo can be meal worms, silkworms, waxworms, ect. make sure they get dusted to though and your leo should be healthy!!

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

The vitamins the leopard gecko needs is calcium which you can buy at the store called repti-cal. If you feed this to your leo every day (with the crickets) than it should be nice and healthy.

Maintenance:

Leos are fairly easy to maintain. You should atleast clean the cage every month and change the water every 2 day. If you are planning on putting a male and female together than they shoud go to the vet and get them a quarentine. Handling should not occur until they leos get bigger (4-5 ") babies should never be handled unless necessary. If a tail falls off there is no need to worry, it will grow one back in atleast 2 months. The tails might not looks as good as its last one but it is still good.

Some Words on this Species:

The leopard Gecko is a very easy lizard to take care of. Leos are loveable to everybody and look very nice. Leopard geckos are recomended the best type of gecko to get because they are handled very easy.
