Care Sheet for Turtles

Average Rating Given To This Care Sheet Is 1.50    (1=lowest, 5=highest)    Last Updated: 04/20/2006

Main Category:

Aquatic/Land

Sub Category:

Turtles

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Iguana-dude

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Eastern Box Turtle

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Ornate Box Turtle

Sexing and Characteristics:

Females have a flat shell, and they usually dont have red eyes. Males have an indent on the end of the bottom of the Plastron. This is like this because of when the males mate with the females, they can balance on the back of their shells.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

You can use either cedar bedding, or just a pine bedding. It is really cheap. Or you can use a bark bedding. you can use a mulch bedding also, or you can use any special reptile bedding meant for turtles. NO SAND. You will also need a water dish big enough for it to fully submerge itself in.

Lighting and UVB:

For a 55 gallon tank i recommend using a 100W spotlight form any store, or you can get one from zoo-med spotlight. for UVA, and UVB lighting you probably get a ReptiGlo 5.0. Or you can get a Powersun UV bulb that is 100W bulb for a 75 gallon tank.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Ambient air temperature should be around 75-85 degrees Ferienheit. Basking spot temperatures should be at 85-90 degrees ferienheit. and humidity should be at 60-80%.

Heating and Equipment:

You will need a ceramic fixture. And only get a ceramic dome fixture. A plastic fixture will not be good enough for a 100W bulb. It might melt. You will also need a heating pad for under the substrate.

Caging Provided:

I think you should use a cage big enough for it to roam around. you should make a cage as big as you can. If you cant, you could build a cage that is around 4’W, 2’D, 2’T, or you can use a 55 gallon tank for a fully grown Turtle.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

Box turtles eat a variety of insects, and fruits. My turtle eats alot of fruits. She especially likes Mangoes, and other citrus fruits. mangoes are very high in calcium, and they provide mass amounts of vitamin C. Also they can eat grasshoppers.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

What I do is I buy a womens multivitamin, it has all of the vitamin needs your turtle requires.

Maintenance:

Clean their cage. it can get REALLY stinky. Especially Box Turtles.

Some Words on this Species:

They are especially friendly. A good way to tame your tortoise, you can hand feed them, and rub the top of their head. They really seem to like this.
