Years Experience:

1 to 2 Years

Species:

Leopard Gecko

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Sexing and Characteristics:

Can be sexed from around about the age of 1 year of age males have what looks like a V shape at the base of the tail with 2 pre anal bumps. Females may sometimes show the lumps but not as big.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

NEVER use any loose particle substrate (sand, bark, mulch, fish tank gravel etc) Reptic-Carpet,Tile,paper towel and newspaper are the best things to use. It has to be cleaned every 2 weeks obviously paper towel and newspaper should be cleaned every 2 days or so. Water should be clean fresh water either bottled or boiled as it gets rid of all the unwanted minerals in the water, a shallow dish of water should be provided and changed on a daily basis.

Lighting and UVB:

As these are nocturnal lizards they do not need UVB lighting but a 60 watt bulb should be provided. for the night time you could also use a night glo bulb which you can buy in many pet stores that are quite inexpensive.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Day time temps should be 85-90 Degrees Fahrenheit and night time should be around 80-85. A UTH (under tank heater) may be provided if your home is quite cold and the bulb is not providing the right temperatures. Do not let the temps go below 75 in the night time other wise your gecko may become too cold. Only 1 hide in the tanks should be misted to help with shedding, this should be misted daily once or twice.

Heating and Equipment:

To heat you could use a 60 watt reflector spot bulb and a UTH or just a 60 watt spot bulb if your house is warm. Leave the bulb on for 12 hours a day so the gecko knows when its time to come out.

Caging Provided:

10 Gallon tank at the least i use a 20 gallon which is best because you can fit more hides in so your gecko doesn’t become stressed. if you are planning on having a number of geckos in your tank remember it is at least 10 gallons to every leo, for example if you have 3 geckos you will need a minimum of a 30 gallon tank to house them. Remember to have lots of hiding spaces for your geckos to hide in and make sure they are secure so they do not fall on your gecko and hurt or even kill it! NEVER house males together as they will fight and eventually kill each other. having a few females is perfectly fine but having a male and a female can lead to the male over breeding the female and stressing her.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Crickets and Mealworms are the best diets for leopard geckos but you can also feed them superworms and other things like that. feed baby leos as many as they can eat in about 20 minutes throw 1 in each time, once it has eaten it the you can throw in another. adults should be fed every other day with the same way of feeding. gut load your crickets, feed them slices of apple and potato to make them as nutritional to your gecko as possible.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

2 times a week dust whatever you feed your leo with calcium containing D3 supplement and every other day calcium without D3 this calcium is very important as it helps their bones develop properly. Remember to have a dish of calcium without d3 in in your tank at all times as they will eat it.

Maintenance:

All together they are very easy to keep and are the perfect beginner lizard. and when kept properly can live quite a long life I’ve heard up to thirty years.
