 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Zingoo

Years Experience:

Southern toad

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

american toad
wood house’s toad

Sexing and Characteristics:

Male southern toads have a dark throat and are slightly smaller than females

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

Must have a water bowl big enough for the toads to all submerge entirely at the same time. this should be changed AT LEAST every 2-3 days depending on how many toads you have. You could have a one-third part of the cage under water and separated by a piece of thick plastic.
you can do this as long as you have a rock to help them climb out of the water.

Never use a large bark-type substrate in a toad’s enclosure, this could easily impact your toad. you can use a bio degradable shredded coconut bark substrate that is pre made or, if you would like to use live plants, you could mix 1-2 cup of peat moss, 6-cups of potting/garden soil(with no chemical fertilizers) and 1 cup of coconut bark (shredded) together to get a substrate that holds enough moisture for you toads to burrow, but not enough to start a fungus or kill plants

double the amounts of ingredients if you are using a twenty

Lighting and UVB:

No UVB lighting is needed. a fluorescent fish light (keepers choice) or a regular heat lamp with a regular light bulb in it would be fine

Temperatures and Humidity:

About 67-75 in the day and 70 - 80 in the day, always mist the cage in the morning, unless the soil is saturated, which would bring your cage to about 60- 70 % humidity

Heating and Equipment:

An under tank heat mat would be useful on one side of the tank, but you could always use a heat lamp during the day

many toads do appreciate a good waterfall or small creek to their water bowl.

Caging Provided:

2 toads could comfortably be housed in a 10 or twenty gallon aquarium

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Many will be comfortable with a diet of crickets, and the occasional supplemented earth worm.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Use calcium only on worms. and only lightly dust one end of the worm. only provide worms with supplements on a once every two week basis

Maintenance:

Spot clean every day or every day after a feeding. clean entire cage every once in a month. substrate can be used effectively in a compost garden

Some Words on this Species:

This is a great beginner amphibian and many mellow and become quite calm when being held
