Main Category:

Sub Category:

Tadpoles

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Nimrod_herper54

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Tadpole

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Frog or Toad tadpole

Sexing and Characteristics:

You cannot tell the difference between male and female until they are froglets or toadlets or adults.

Mostly Active During:

Both

Substrate and Water Needs:

For a substrate you can use regular aquarium pebbles. The water level should be 4" to 8".

Lighting and UVB:

If you want better day-time viewing you can place an icandesant bulb over the tank. Do not use a regular household lightbulb, for it will melt through any plastic it comes in contact with.

Temperatures and Humidity:

The water temperature should range from 65 degrees Fahrenheit to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The humidity level should be low until the tadpoles turn into froglets or toadlets, then it should be higher.

Heating and Equipment:

No heating is required unless you place the aquarium in a cold room. For equipment you can use store-bought aquatic plants or take some from the tadpole’s habitat. Some large rocks stacked on top of each other and a few twigs should top it off.

Caging Provided:

A large jar or Tupperware container can be used, or you can use 5 gallon Kritter Keepers or 10 gallon fish aquariums.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

You can feed tadpoles goldfish flakes or buy special tadpole food in your local pet-store. Once they reach froglet or toadlet stage, you should introduce insects, such as water beetles from a nearby pond.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Not needed.

Maintenance:

If you have a filter hooked up to your aquarium, you will need to change the water weekly. If not, change the water every 2-3 days.

Some Words on this Species:

Raising tadpoles can be an exciting experience. You’ll feel happy once your tadpoles turn into froglets or toadlets, knowing that you raised them from tiny frog or toad larvae.
