 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

2 Green Iguanas, 1 Red Eared Slider Turtle

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Just the 2 Iguanas

Sexing and Characteristics:

Bert is a drab green and bits of brighter green here and there, very mellow. His tail got caught in the vines in his cage so he is now only 7 1/2" STL and 3 1/2" SVL.

Ernie is very bright green and turquoise here and there, he is quite feisty and does not like being picked up yet. He is 12 1/2" STL and 3 1/2" SVL. I think that he is actually the male of the 2 due to his coloring.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

I am using coconut husk, only because I had it left over from another pet. They get fresh water every day.

Lighting and UVB:

I am using a 60 watt halogen bulb for heat. I do not have a uvb/uva light yet. I had been reading all sorts of articles saying that they are useless. I recently got an email from a vet saying otherwise. So I will be getting the fluorescent bulb this weekend. Right now though they are going outside everyday for real sunlight. I will be putting them outside as much as possible until the temps cool down, we all live in the thumb of Michigan and the temps are not always well up there.

Temperatures and Humidity:

The temp is about 95-105 under the heat lamp and about 75 on the cool side and around 80-85 on the warm side.

Heating and Equipment:

Heat lamp as stated above and a reptile heating pad NOT attached to the underside of 1/2 of the tank.

Caging Provided:

Right now they are in a 10 gallon tank. I am waiting for them to grow a bit before I bring in my 90 gallon. I am thinking of setting the 90 up on it’s end. I have a double sided screened top for it, so getting in and out of it should be no problem. My husband thinks that this is not a good idea due to the fact that the tank was made to carry water sitting upright, not up on end. I think that since it is not going to be holding 90 gals of water there should be no problem and it will give Bert and Ernie the height that they so well desire. ANY thoughts please email me.
I also have a large bird cage (my 5 year old decided to see if the bird really loved us and let him go, after the discipline for that one she wont go near the cages anymore:) ) that I sewed screen over so that they can go outside in safety. They can not get out and nothing can get in

Diet:

Herbivorous

Description of Diet:

Holy Crap!!! What don’t I give them??? Let’s see, their diet consist of right now, (it changes every time I go to the grocery store) (largest amounts listed first) Dandelion greens, Romain Lettuce, shredded Butternut Squash, and Sweet Potato, fruit, Cherries, Musk Mellon, and Flowers, Nasturtiums, and Calendula, and some Nasturtium leaves. Where I live it is hard to get some of the deeper greens that they need. Come winter I will be making weekly trips downstate to get what they need.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

ReptiCal

Maintenance:

Not much to do right now, fresh food and water, extract feces, and check temps. Always checking the two Godzilla’s for health when I hold them so really do not need to list this.

Some Words on this Species:

I had a very crotchety rescued Ig. I absolutely loved him, we all loved him. You could not really pick him up, you could NOT touch him unless he was sleeping and even then he would open one eye and if was not me or my step daughter Tanya, he would move away or start thrashing him arm or tail. He was SEVERELY abused, he escaped, me and the kids all cried, it was awful!!!!!!!!! So after all this my husband said to get another ( you would have to know Max, he fights on getting ANY animals. He won’t clean up and ETC......blah blah blah ) He said to maybe get 2 so that it has a friend, so I did. It amazes me how smart they can be, and deeply disturbs me how they all seem to be disposable pets. you can not buy another reptile except for Anoles for under 20 dollars, it is so sad because they are such wonderful animals.
