Years Experience:
3 to 5 Years
Species:
Feeder Cricket
Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:
N/A
Sexing and Characteristics:
Male have large wings on their back, and only have to ’feelers’, females have two feelers and a long ovipositer to deposit eggs into soil.
Mostly Active During:
Both
Substrate and Water Needs:
I use plain white, no-ink paper, the crickets don’t seem to mind, and it’s very easy to maintain and clean.
Lighting and UVB:
They don’t need a definite light source to survive, but they seem to grow faster with lighting. I have mine in a 10 Gallon tank with a lighting fixture on during the day.
Temperatures and Humidity:
Adult’s are not too picky, but when trying to hatch eggs, or keeping newborn pinheads, aim for about 77 F.
Heating and Equipment:
They don’t really need it..
Caging Provided:
All of mine are in a 10 gallon tank, I have a large egg carton, and smaller pieces of carton scattered around the tank, with an empty paper towel roll, and 2 toilet paper rolls with holes in them. They’re also, two containers, about 2 1/2" deep in their, with organic potting soil (WITHOUT CHEMICALS.. PLEASE!) that is loosly in their, not compacted tightly.
Diet:
Omnivorous
Description of Diet:
I feed mine oats, lettuce, potato peels and small slices, carrot, small bits of apple, romaine lettuce with water sprinkled on it for more water. For water, I have a small lid about 1/4" deep, with spring water in it, I change it, and they food supply daily.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
To make them more nutritious for my herps, I sprinkle their food with Calc D3 2000 powder.
Maintenance:
Since I use paper, I clean mine whenever I get a new shipment of breeder crickets, or 2 times monthly. It never seems to get dirty, they seem to defecate in the egg cartons.
Some Words on this Species:
They are very nutritious for your reptiles and amphibians, you can raise them to whatever size you would like to make it a good size to feed to your animals.
