Sexing and Characteristics:
Ok, their are a lot of myths out their. so i hope you do not use the dewlap or white strip test as a tell tale method, for you could easily be wrong
white stripe test : accuracy = 60%, you are basically guessing. although females usually retain a white stripe down their back, males can also retain a white or grey mid dorsal line, one of my males mid dorsal lines is whiter than one of my females! also, ALL babies have these white lines.
head size :accuracy= 60.6565465%. you are still guessing. males do tend to have a larger head, yet this method isn’t really even considered a test, more of just taking a quick glance at the pet store to help you decide if you can’t get a anal scale view ( we will get to that later).
dewlap test: accuracy= 4%. males tend to have larger dewlaps, but females do OFTEN have light colored dewlaps, even colored dewlaps occasionally.
bulge test : accuracy = 90%. males always have two bumps near where the tail meets the body. these are called hemipenile bulges. only mature males have these.
post anal scale test : accuracy = 99.9999999994%. males have two large scales right after the anus. there is a 0.0000000006% chance of visual error.
Mostly Active During:
Day
Substrate and Water Needs:
Substrate~ organic potting soil. NO FERTILIZERS!!!!11one!!!
water~ anoles seldom drink from stagnant water. you will want to mist the leaves of plants many times a day not only to increase humidity, but also so your anoles are not dehydrated.
Lighting and UVB:
UvB is a must! without it, anoles can develop a bone disease similar to osteoporosis,
Temperatures and Humidity:
Humidity should be around 70. basking temps of 90F, along with an ambient of 80 hot 70 cool (day) and 75 hot and 65 cool at night. anoles NEED to be able to thermoregulate.
Heating and Equipment:
Basking light and a uvb light.
Caging Provided:
10 gallons per anole period! even hatching’s NEED 10 gallons to exhibit natural behavior. some species even need 30! but bigger is better, as it will not only make it EASIER FOR YOU by making a temperature gradient easier to maintain, but allow for even more room for play and territory if you have more than one in a tank. personally, i give 30 gallons per anole, 40 for pairs, and 55 for trios. but think you can fit five in a 55? probably not. just because yo have a large enclosure, are you using it all? you will need either extremely high plants and twigs, or suction store bought plants you can stick to the side of the tank to allow for maximum living space. so just to be on the safe side, go 15-20 gallons per anole encase you aren’t providing enough things for them to be on.
Diet:
Carnivorous
Description of Diet:
Appropriately sized crickets (smaller than the head) are generally a staple, but not the only food choice. anoles love small grass hoppers an tiny moths, which will not only give your wallet a break if you have an out door light (to catch moths), but it also allows for variation in diet. NEVER feed mealworms as they have a chitinous exo-skeleton which may cause impaction. you may also feed wax worms to a sick or thin anole, but do not give to a healthy or fat anole as they are EXTREMELY high in fat.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
Calcium and d3 vitamin supplements should be given via dusted crickets a few times a week. young and gravid(pregnant) females should be given dusted crickets every day to help with bone growth (young) and to counter act the loss of calcium when making eggs (female)
Maintenance:
you will want to thoroughly clean every bit of the cage about once a month, soap and water only, any left over bleach will seriously harm your pet, and remove waist and dead bugs every day. you will notice you will need to clean the sides of glass enclosures often do to misting stains.
Some Words on this Species:
Although anoles are fun to watch, they are not a beginner lizard. they require a lot of care, and are extremely stressed by handling. you will find your cute little $6 lizard will cost you well over 150 USD just setting up the cage.
