Years Experience:

10 to 15 Years

Species:

CHINESE WATER DRAGON

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Sexing and Characteristics:

THE MALES ARE GENERALLY MUCH LARGER. THEY ARE MORE AGGRESSIVE AND MAY BE SEEN BITING THE BACK OF A FEMALE’S NECK. ALTHOUGH FEMALES ALSO HAVE A BLACK STRIPE NEXT TO THEIR EYES, THE MALE’S ARE MUCH DARKER AND LONGER. THE MALES ALSO HAVE MORE DEFINED PORES UNDER THE BASE OF THEIR TALES.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

I HAVE TRIED ABOUT EVERY SUBSTRATE ON THE MARKET AND THE BEST THING I FOUND IS JUST WATER. YOU WILL WANT ABOUT 1-2 INCHES OF GRAVEL AT THE BOTTOM WITH ABOUT 3-5 INCHES OF WATER.

Lighting and UVB:

SINCE THEY ARE MAINLY ACTIVE DURING THE DAY, UVB LIGHTING IS A MUST. ALSO, A BASKING LIGHT IS A NECESSITY AS THEY WILL EITHER BE SWIMMING OR BASKING.

Temperatures and Humidity:

IF YOU SET UP YOUR CAGE AS I HAVE DESCRIBED, HUMIDITY SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM. THE BASKING LIGHT WILL KEEP IT WARM AND THE WATER WILL BE EVAPORATING, KEEPING IT DAMP AND WARM. IF IT IS TOO DRY SHEDDING PROBLEMS CAN OCCUR. I HAVE A FEMALE THAT COULDN’T SHED AROUND HER EYES. THIS LED TO IN INFECTION WHICH IN TURN LED TO BLINDNESS. IF THE SKIN AROUND THE EYES LOOKS DRY OR CRACKED, IT IS DEFINITELY TOO DRY IN THE AQUARIUM.

Heating and Equipment:

I HAVE A BASKING LAMP AND A TROPICAL FISH HEATER SET AT 80 DEGREES. I ALSO HAVE A FISH AQUARIUM FISH FILTER SINCE WATER DRAGONS LOVE TO USE THE BATHROOM IN THE WATER.

Caging Provided:

A COMFORTABLE SPACE IS ABOUT 50 GALLONS PER WATER DRAGON. BECAUSE THEY LOVE TO CLIMB, TALLER IS BETTER THAN LONGER. IF YOU KEEP THE BOTTOM FILLED WITH WATER YOU MUST HAVE PLENTY OF PLACES THEY CAN CLIMB UP TO BASK. VINES, PLANTS, AND ROCKS ARE GREAT.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

WATER DRAGONS WILL EAT ANYTHING THAT THEY CAN GET INTO THEIR MOUTHS. I’VE HEARD THAT THEY WILL EAT FRUITS AND VEGGIES BUT MINE WILL ONLY EAT SOMETHING THEY SEE MOVE. I HAVE THREE AND NONE HAVE EVER EATEN ANYTHING BUT BUGS. CRICKETS ARE A FAVORITE, BUT ANYTHING WILL DO.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I KEEP A SMALL CALCIUM DUST BOWL IN THE CAGE AT ALL TIMES

Maintenance:
