Years Experience:

Species:

Testudo.Hermanni.B

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

hermanns tortoise, small tortoise

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males tend to have a larger tail than females with a claw/hook on the end. females have small stubby tails with a tiny claw/hook.

They have a yellow/goldy/olive based shell with a nice black/navy/dark brown markings.
plastron is same as carapace but more markings that base coloring.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

Substrates vary:

soil/playsand mixed with hemp in the hide areas.
All hemp
All soil/playsand mixed
or you can have large pebbles, slate bits and the rest soil and playsand mixed with hemp in bedding areas.
some hermanns like new textures of substrates.

you should have a nice large bowl big enough for the tortoise to sit in for a nice soak every morning and night, or during the day. and soak the tortoise once a week-2 times a week

Lighting and UVB:

Between a 60 wattage to a 100 wattage uvb light, and a basking light of 75 wattage.
change uv light every 6-9 months
uv light should be 6 inches above tortoise

Temperatures and Humidity:

I’m confused on humidity so temps under basking light should be roughly between 86-95. provides good basking section.
and i think that’s it.

Heating and Equipment:

No under caging heaters should be put in as the tortoise can burn if they dig.

Some people use a black light for night times to keep them warmish, or a ceramic heating.
But i personally say at night time leave lights off as it sometimes does a tortoise good to cool down.

Caging Provided:

At first i provided a tank.
but i was wrong to.

proper enclosure should be....

A tortoise table top enclosure for adults.
but babies between 2 inches to 4 inches can be put in a large rabbit cage. that’s at least 4 foot long.
Tortoise table for adults should be at least 10 foot if possible.

Diet:

Herbivorous

Description of Diet:

Nothing but weeds!

dandelions,bindweeds,pansy,rose petals,petunia,geranium,plantain,yarrow,maple,hibiscus,clovers,sow thistle,creeping bell,sweet potato leaves,aloe,agave and much more.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Calcium powder should be given as well as vitamin supplements.
some people use nutrobal once a week and use limestone flour 3-4 times a week.

Maintenance:

They can be hard to keep, providing you have right husbandry and everything then they’re low maintenance
