Years Experience:
3 to 5 Years
Species:
American Toad (Bufo americanus)
Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:
Any true toad like Southern toads, fowler toads, Woodhouse toads, etc
Sexing and Characteristics:
Females are alot bigger than male’s and female tend to have a clean non-dotted like throat’s and males have dotted like spots on there throat’s.
Mostly Active During:
Night
Substrate and Water Needs:
You can use organic peat moss, organic potting soil, coco-fiber and some other organic soil. I use about 3-5 inches of soil in my tank, so the american toad’s may burrow up. Use a water bowl that is big enough for the toads to lay in and no deeper then the toads throat. Use fresh de-chlorinated water and change it ever day.
Lighting and UVB:
No special lighting is needed, use a low WATT bulb. I use a 15-25 watt bulb for mine.
Temperatures and Humidity:
Day: 75-80
Night: 65-70
You do not need to have much humidity as these toad’s can dry up from to much humidity. I spray my toad’s tank ones or twice a day (toads will sometimes come up from the burrows if you spray the tank)
Heating and Equipment:
A heat mat is no required, and DON’T use heat rock’s as it will burn your toad. A thermometer is needed.
Caging Provided:
I use 4 inches of organic peat moss, then i bought 3 live plant’s to make the tank look cooler and provide hiding spot’s. I bought a thermometer and a water bowl that the toad’s may lay in. i use a standard 20gal tank, which i house 4 American toad’s in. (one toad = 5 gal, but bigger the better)
I provide then a 15 WATT bulb.
Diet:
Carnivorous
Description of Diet:
American toad’s mostly like to eat Cricket’s but worm’s and mealworm’s are on there menu as well.Rule of thumb is "Feed your toad as much as it will eat in 15 minutes to determine the amount fed each feeding period" ( i feed mine every night)
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
Dust the cricket’s with powder calcium to make your toad more health ( you can feed your cricket’s "gut loaded" which also help your toads health )
Maintenance:
Clean toad every 1-2 weeks depending on the amount of toad’s you have and spot clean it ever month. Change water EVER day.
Some Words on this Species:
American toads are fun toads to raise and love. I hope you enjoy them as much as i do =)
