 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Emperor Scorpion

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

N/A

Sexing and Characteristics:

Look at the pectines(white feathery comb like "V" shaped protrusions) on the underside of the scorpion these are larger and more defined on the males.

Mostly Active During:

N/A

Substrate and Water Needs:

Place two inches of gravel on the bottom of the tank covered by a layer of fine wire. On top of the wire place 4-6 inches of pure peat moss. After these steps have been completed pour water in until the level of the water is even with the gavel. Do this and you will not have to do anything, but add water once a week or so to keep the humidity up.

Lighting and UVB:

No lighting is required but a inferred light can be used to help heat the enclosure. Using a inferred light will also make the environment dry out faster.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Maintain temperatures between 75-80 degrees F. and 80% relative humidity. For breeding the temperature should be 85-95 degrees F. and 90% relative humidity. Always allow a portion of the tank to be around 70-80 degrees F. so the emperor scorpion(s) can escape from the heat.

Heating and Equipment:

Use either a UTH (under tank heater) mounted on the side of the tank or a inferred light. Never mount the UTH to the bottom of the tank because emperor scorpions burrow to escape from the heat.

Caging Provided:

Use a ten gallon tank for one emperor scorpion or a pair, 20 gallon for three to five emperor scorpions, and a 30 gallon breeder tank for six to eight emperors scorpions. Emperor scorpions are normally communal, but sometimes there will be an extremely aggressive one in this case just separate the aggressive emperor scorpion or you may find it killing and/or eating your other emperor scorpions. Cover the tank with a wire screen lid with 85% of the lid either covered in plastic wrap or you can have a piece of glass cut and attach it to the underside of the lid using silicon. You need to use a piece of glass or plastic wrap to help hold in the humidity.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Feed emperor scorpions 2-4 crickets or roaches a week per scorpion.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

No supplements are needed although you can dust the crickets or roaches in a calcium supplement.

Maintenance:

Remove all uneaten prey and prey remains and clean out the entire tank once every six months.

Some Words on this Species:

Emperor scorpions are extremely fascinating to watch, but be careful not to stress the out by continually holding them or removing the lid again and again.
Good Luck!
