Sexing and Characteristics:
Males have a large cloaca that appears swollen

Substrate and Water Needs:
Fresh water and smooth gravel works well.The gravel should be big enough not to be swollen. Provide a island or rock out of the water for young newts, the adults are fully aquatic.
Lighting and UVB:
None, normal day light but not direct sun.
Temperatures and Humidity:
Keep it quite humid because your newt may not be smart enough to go in the water if it’s too dry. Newts prefer cold water between 66 and 68 degrees F. The colder the better.

A ten gallon tank will fit up to 5 newts.
Diet:
Carnivorous
Description of Diet:
Pellets, pinhead crickets, bloodworms, mealworms, whiteworms, blackworms, and chopped earthworms or night crawlers.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
If you feed it insects you should dust them with calcium powder.
Maintenance:
Clean tank weekly and use a water pump. Make sure the pump isn’t to strong so it sucks the newt to the filter guard. And if you use a water bubbler make sure it doesn’t airate the water too much because it may cause bloat in your animal.
