Species:
Crested Gecko
Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:
Crested Geckos
Sexing and Characteristics:
Mostly nocturnal, hide during they day or simply lay around
Mostly Active During:
Night
Substrate and Water Needs:
Use mostly a mulch like substrate. Sand isn’t good as this is a jungle dwelling species.
Lighting and UVB:
Using UVB light is unnecessary. Use a low watt bulb to maintain the temperature in the cage from about 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit
Temperatures and Humidity:
Keep the cage at about 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit, and mist the cage at least twice a day, possibly more.
Heating and Equipment:
For the third time, use a low watt bulb to keep temp between 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit.
Caging Provided:
10 gallons is about the perfect size for one crested gecko. Have a 20 gallon cage for 2, and 29 gallon cage snugly fits 3. However, I don’t suggest putting more than 3 in a cage together. Provide many climbing branches and foliage (fake or real). Hiding spots aren’t necessary, but some crested do like to hide sometimes. Provide a dish for food and I suggest a dish of calcium powder for a female. Females will sometimes eat the calcium powder plain.
Diet:
Omnivorous
Description of Diet:
Provide baby food or any other type of crested gecko powder mix twice a week. You can obtain this powder mix at most pet stores, and many employees will tell you these mixes are better for the animal. However, I don’t think there is much of a difference besides the price. Also, provide crickets at night. Only give them as many crickets as they will eat in about 30 minutes. Occasionally provide mealworms also.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
Dust crickets in calcium powder before feeding them too the gecko
Maintenance:
Clean their cage out as often as you can. Always provide fresh, unchlorinated water in a water dish and calcium powder in a small feeding dish. Mist their cages twice a day, once in the morning, once in the night. If you like, you can also mist at mid-day
Some Words on this Species:
Crested Geckos tend to stress out easily, so limit handling. When you do handle, handle gently, don’t make the animal feel threatened. NEVER BOTHER ITS TAIL! Crested geckos tails, unlike most geckos, will not grow back if it falls off. Avoid ever bothering its tail.
