Species:
Golden Gecko/Gekko Ulikovski
Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:
Golden Geckos
Sexing and Characteristics:
Two enlarged pores. One on either side of the vent.
(Mine MUST be a female) Yellowish green in color. Red and brown flecked eyes
Mostly Active During:
Night
Substrate and Water Needs:
Natural moss and peat mixed, I keep it semi-moist. They need lots of humidity, but I’ve noticed mine nails & feet get red almost like cellulitis every time I over water the substrate.
I mist once daily, and she has a bowl that it occasionally gets into. We have just purchased a misty mountain volcano for her. It produces a fog like mist without over saturating the mosses. (We’ll see how it works)
Lighting and UVB:
Golden Geckos are nocturnal arboreal geckos. So she gets natural sun light during the day time and we use a red heat lamp at night. I wrote to a scientist in Germany for help when we first got her. She said this works well there. (she’s been right so far)
Temperatures and Humidity:
Temps. are usually between 77-90 constant. She is most active when cage is kept above 79. Best activity about 82-87.
Humidity is usually between 65-85 percent. We did not experience any shedding problems at the 65 percent range.
I spray once daily though and check the gages frequently.
Heating and Equipment:
I’ve tried the heat rock. Didn’t work well at all. It made her lethargic and she refused to move from it. We then tried a 100wt uvb day glow lamp. This in it self did not heat the tank properly. So we now use an under the tank heat pad and the night time red lamp bulbs. It seems to work great. She’s active and healthy.
Caging Provided:
Right now she’s in a 10 to 15 gallon glass tank with a screen lid. We are busy setting up the new cage which is 65 gallon glass tank. We provide lots of small and medium branches for her to climb on, A coconut shell to hid in. Rocks,& plants. But she still likes hanging from the sides up side down most of the time. (HUNTING)
Diet:
Omnivorous
Description of Diet:
Mostly gut loaded crickets. About every other day 4 at a time. (not full grown crickets!) She also gets peach baby food (her fav.) She has eaten finely chopped fresh/soft fruits too.
Sometimes she’ll lick the baby food from my finger!
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
I mix reptocal in the baby food once per week. I sometimes also dust the crickets.
Maintenance:
My Golden Gecko is mostly maintenance free. You do have to clean the substrate about every other week. If there is a shedding problem, you can mist and then with a gentle hand pull off any skin that stayed stuck on. This happened 2 times when we first got her. She sheds once per month just like a clock. Be sure that cage is mite free. We got some bad bedding and the mites were everywhere!
Some Words on this Species:
Shy! Doesn’t like to be handled. Mine will sulk for a day or two after being picked up, but will allow us to stroke her. She has even been known to chirp or squeak when first picked up.
Over all great pet to own and observe. We find her more interesting then the TV most nights! Natures
most interesting creatures. .
