 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Anonymous

Years Experience:

5 to 10 Years

Species:

Red Headed Agama, (Agama Agama)

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

NONE

Sexing and Characteristics:

Females are entirely brown in color. Males are also brown but will change colors depending on mood, heat, etc... Their heads will be a bright ornagish red color, and the body will have blues and greens in it.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

Naturally inhabit semi desert and scrublands of Africa. I recommend using Orchard sand bark, or an easily digestible calcium fortified sand.
Require low levels of humidity, and a small dish of water which should be changed daily.

Lighting and UVB:

I have mine on 14/10 hour light cycles. I provide a full spectrum UVB light during the day and a lower wattage infrared heat light at night

Temperatures and Humidity:

Low humidity.
Daytime temperature of 80 with a basking area of 90.
Night time temptress in the range of 70 to 74

Heating and Equipment:

Use a reptile heating mat for 24 hour ground heat

Caging Provided:

Most reach around 15 inches full grown with some up to 24 inches. I would recommend an enclosure no smaller than 48"X18"X18".
They are avid climbers and very active during the day. Be sure to provide plenty of branches and rocks to climb on. Also be sure to include hiding areas.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Their diets consist mostly of insect such as crickets, locust, meal worms, silkworms, and waxworms. I also offer mine the very occasional pinky.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I use a calcium supplement on every other feeding.

Maintenance:

Spot clean tank and provide fresh water daily. I also clean entire cage biweekly.

Some Words on this Species:

Males tend to be dominant and should not be housed together.
These lizards do tend to be a bit flighty or nervous. With time, proper care and regular handing I do believe they become tamer.
