Main Category:

Sub Category:

Geckos: Crested

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Glowinggecko123

Years Experience:

1 to 2 Years

Species:

Crested Gecko

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

just crested geckos

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males develop bulges at the base of their tail at approx. 3 to 4 months of age. females lack these traits.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

Mist down the cage to provide water twice per day. a shallow water bowl can be used.
for substrate, use paper towels or just plain paper. that’s all i use and it works wonders for me. it’s easy to see any fecal oddities.
for naturalistic setups, you may use shredded coco fiber or cypress mulch.

Lighting and UVB:

No UV required. no lighting is needed unless u live in an area where the temperature is cold in the winter. a small red or blue bulb may be used.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Ambient temperature: 72-75 degrees
basking temperature: no higher than 85 degrees
humidity: minimum of 60%, ideally 75%

Heating and Equipment:

None, unless temperatures are below 65 degrees. use a Small red or blue bulb.

Caging Provided:

I use either exo terra glass terrariums or screened cages. for a single adult or two hatch lings use a cage measuring at least 12’’x12’’x18’’. for two adults use a 18’’x18’’x24’’. more adults will require a larger cage.
add a hide box or two and live or artificial foliage. provide branches of different sizes and orientation throughout the cage. when housing breeding groups on paper, it is especially important to have a nest box filled halfway with a moist substrate. i use coco bedding and my female has laid several clutches successfully in it.
pieces of cork bark may also be used.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

I feed mostly Crested Gecko Diet (cgd) by T Rex. u may also feed them four to six crickets that are no longer than the length of the gecko’s head. i also feed bananas, small bits of apple, and low fat yogurt(sparingly).
other good foods are applesauce, silkworms, and peaches.
DO NOT feed baby food!!!! it was made for human babies, not geckos. it has VERY LITTLE nutritional value.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

If feeding only cgd, no supplementation is needed. u may want to dust the crickets every third or fourth feeding for adults, and every second or third feeding for hatch lings. supplements that work well are rep cal, reptivite, and miner-all.

Maintenance:

Remove uneaten food in the morning. once per week rid the cage of fecal matter. if using a naturalistic setup, maintenance can be reduced to once every few weeks.

Some Words on this Species:

Crested geckos are great for beginner and advanced hobbyists alike. they come in a wide array of colors. most tame down but a few are jumpy.
