Sub Category:

King Snakes

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Solid9

Years Experience:

1 to 2 Years

Species:

Striped California King Snake

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Lampropeltus Getula Californae

Sexing and Characteristics:

I’m fairly sure my fella is male - you can tell male from female because females tend to have short fat tales whereas males have long thin ones. Please note this is not an accurate way to sex your snake - he/she must be probed by a professional who knows what they are doing!

Mostly Active During:

Both

Substrate and Water Needs:

I give him fir bark made by zoomed called reptibark which is readily available in any pet store. For gods sake don’t use cedar as this is toxic to snakes. I change his water daily using an additive called reptisafe which removes chlorine and other harmful chemicals from it.

Lighting and UVB:

I use a 40w daytime basking bulb and a 15w nighttime blue light. Never use a heat rock with snakes as there are many reported cases of snakes being burned on them.

Temperatures and Humidity:

His hot spot is around 30 deg centigrade and his cool spot is 22 degrees centigrade.

Heating and Equipment:

His heat is provided by lamp only. He has a large water bath for both drinking and bathing as these snakes love to soak themselves on a regular basis. His hide is a cave roughly 8" x 6" x 6". He also has a second hide near his hot spot for morning time basking. I have several artificial branches for climbing and he loves them.

Caging Provided:

He currently resides in a 24" x 18" x 24" which i will have to replace when he is nearing his adult size.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

He gets a feed of 2 - 3 fluffies every seven days and this seems to suit him better than 1 or 2 large mice over the same period

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

The only supplement i use is reptisafe water conditioner.

Maintenance:

Cleaning his Viv takes around half an hour once a month. I replace all bedding after removing the old i clean the inside with a weak solution of soapy water. This is then rinsed with clean water before the clean bedding goes in. His Viv furniture is washed thoroughly then dried.

Some Words on this Species:

A cracking snake very even tempered he has only bitten me once and that was because i picked him up awkwardly. Very nosy and loves to be into everything. Do not underestimate the power of a king snake to get into any available space!. Oh and the best bit of advice i can give is buy a padlock for that viv!. lol!
