Sub Category:

Agamas

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Shive

Years Experience:

1 to 2 Years

Species:

Pale Agama

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

some other agama species

Sexing and Characteristics:

It is very easy with to tell the sex of Pale Agamas, males have bright blue "beards".

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

Most people say that you can use and of the sand substrates you find in pet stores. I do NOT use this. Impaction has happened before when I first started with lizards. Though it wasn’t an Agama that was affected I don’t want to take the chance. I use paper towels but you could also use tile if you want to grout it in. Shelf liner, repti-carpet, etc. Anything that can’t be ingested would be best. For water you need a shallow dish that they can lay in. I find my agamas laying in the water dish most of the day. Sometimes more than they spend in the basking spot. It’s a great spot for them to cool off or just be lazy.

Lighting and UVB:

Because Pale Agama’s are most active during the day they need a source of UVB rays. You can use the slimline lamp that has the long skinny bulbs. That is what I use and it works fine. I would say no lower than 5% but I use 8%. They also need a basking light to digest their food properly.

Temperatures and Humidity:

The cooler side of the cage should be no less than 80F in the day time. Their basking spot should stay at no less than 90F. Though my lizard’s basking spot is at 98F. Night time should stay around 70F.

Heating and Equipment:

You will need a good heat lamp and UVb lamp. For bulbs make sure the actual lamp can handle the bulb watt you get. You will have to experiment with bulb watts to find a good temp for basking.

Caging Provided:

I house my male and female in a 20gallon long critter cage. Some people say that one adult can live in a 10 gallon tank. I think that is too small. The bigger the better I think.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

I feed mealworms mostly. I provide crickets once a week. You can also feed waxworms as treats but never more than once or twice a week. You can feed other feeder insects but remember nothing too big. Nothing bigger than the space between their eyes.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

You should dust their food at least 2-3 times a week. Pure calcium w/NO D3. Calcium w/D3 should be dusted on their food at least once a week.

Maintenance:

Cleaning of the cage once a week and water bowl daily is pretty much all you need to do. You must replace the UVB bulb every few months though even if it is still burning it can lose the effect after a while. So to provide efficient UVB rays you should replace it no less than once every 4 months.

Some Words on this Species:

Pale Agamas are very docile and make great first time lizards. A male was my first lizard and he is the best lizard I could ask for. He will sit on my shoulder all day if I let him. Though you should keep an eye on them because if they see something move, even a shadow on the wall, they will take off. I have never gotten bitten by either of my agamas. They are excellent pets and if you take care of them properly then you and your lizard will be extremely happy.
