Sub Category:

Geckos: Crested

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Crested Gecko

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

N/A

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males will develop a bulge at the base of the tail. Females are usually larger than males. You can usually tell their sex at 7 months.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

I use bark chips(I want to switch it to coco fiber) but I wouldn’t recommend using anything that isn’t organic or is extremely big. Paper towels are a simple substrate but you will have to switch it every 3 days or so. My favorite substrate is Coconut fiber. It is organic, so if ingested it will pass and won’t cause impaction. Some geckos will drink out of a bowl(such as mine) but most lap up water from plants, themselves and tank decorations after a spraying.

Lighting and UVB:

I use a UVB bulb to prevent certain diseases but it is not required. If your tank is planted you will have to provide proper lighting.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Daytime temperatures can range from 74-78. At night, the temperature can safely dip into the mid sixties without a problem. Humidity should range from 65%-75%(70% being the most comfortable for them)

Heating and Equipment:

No undertank heater is required. ABSOLUTELY NO HOT ROCKS. Since Cresteds don’t have nerves on their undersides, they can easily get burned. A mister can be used but is optional. Always have a spray bottle with purified water handy. Artificial plants are a must or you may use live plants if you wish.

Caging Provided:

I provide a 25 gal screen cage that has a bendable vine, a couple artificial plants, and a background he can climb on.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

I feed mine chopped up fruit(bananas, apples, pears, melon etc no veggies) fruit baby food, Crested Gecko Diet, and 3/8s to half grown GUT LOADED crickets. I also recommend Phoenix worms. Flightless fruit flies may be accepted. A good rule of thumb for insect size is no bigger the the length between the eyes of your gecko.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Dust feeder insects once a week with a multi vitamin powder, and calcium powder. You may use the powders at the same time on the same insects, but do not mix and store them together as the effectiveness will decrease.

Maintenance:

Break down the cage once a month and clean thoroughly. If using one, make sure the water dish is clean and has water. If the water is dirty, remove it, clean the dish and put new purified water into it. Mist the tank 3-5 times a day depending on how much ventilation the tank gets.

Some Words on this Species:

Cresteds are a great beginner reptile. They can become quite social and can tolerate handling to an extent. They don’t get very big, usually 7-9 inches including the tail. They are great for kids.
