 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Jules Doucet

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Chinese Water Dragon

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Green water dragon, australian water dragon and basiliks

Sexing and Characteristics:

To have your water dragon sexed the best is to have a pro take a look at it but if your the do it yourself kinda guy here’s the info! I’m only going to give u one simple thing because i don’t want u harming the lizard. Under the belly where it poop’s there should be a (v) shaped marking if u see the (v) very well it is a female, otherwise its a male.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

For your substrate. the most common thing to use is aspen shavings. But try to create something new and improved and not harmful if ingested.

For your water. remember they bathe in the same water they drink so keep it clean.
I use a water for my substrate With a submersible filter to keep it clean.

Lighting and UVB:

For your lighting. Always use a (UV) bulb because if u don’t it can cause the lizards tail to curl and if continued could be fatal.

So try to keep it under a 75 watt (UV) bulb and switch from day to night bulbs.

Temperatures and Humidity:

For the temperature. Room temperature is good.

But for the humidity u want to keep it around (80) because if it does not get the proper humidity it can cause laziness and can make your lizard look like he is always dead.

Heating and Equipment:

U can use a specialized lamp from pet stores or if u want something just as good and cheaper try Canadian tire or home hardware and u could also use heating pads from a specialized store or from drug store the ones used for humans they work just as good.

Caging Provided:

When your water dragon is just a baby you might want to keep him in a 10 gallon tank. When he gets around (15 inch) you might want to try a 40 gallon tank but when he gets full grown which is about (30 inch) try a custom built cage for max comfort

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

Water dragons can eat anything from small frogs, fish, mice and other lizards and also insects.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

For your supplements use calcium powder with (d3) with insects. it is critical that u use (D3) because if u do not it could cause calcium deficiency and that can lead to death

Maintenance:

Maintenance is easy because if u have a soil substrate the poo that’s on the substrate is biodegradable which means is dissolves in the soil but in the water change the water every day with a bleach solution and rinse thoroughly

Some Words on this Species:

They are very exiting species i would not recommend them for a first pet because they are not the easiest to take care of. I made that mistake of getting one for a first pet and wow did that not go good. But when they are happy you ll realize it because it will be striped bright green and when it is stressed it will turn brown
