 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Mcdean

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Three Toed Box Turtle

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Three-toed Box Turtle

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males have Red Eyes, Females Brown, Males have thicker bigger tails and concave Plastrons to facilitate mating.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

Moisture holding bark is best, but not too wet as shell rot and parasites are a danger.

Lighting and UVB:

Heat lights and UV lights are necessary for indoor enclosures, build a hide box out of wood or I’ve seen a cardboard box used.

Temperatures and Humidity:

70 -80 degrees but not too hot you don’t want to cook your turtle!!!

They can handle cool better, aka they get lethargic.

Heating and Equipment:

Avoid bottom heating use lights.

Caging Provided:

I built a turtle table out of an old d4 by 4 dining room table, put 11 inch wood wall cut 2 windows, these guys like privacy, and a screen on top that swings open. Stain with non toxic stain for water protection and I find it better and cheaper than a large terrarium, they seem to enjoy it better too.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

Mine are finicky , try a variety of veggies , fruit and live foods. Mine like Strawberries, raspberries, Frozen Peas and Waxworms the most, I hand feed the waxies dust food with calcium. I leave an old dog bone they chew on, preferably with a bit of meat .

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Calcium supplement.

Maintenance:

Clean their bath at least once a day as they like to defecate and take baths, and drink out of it.

Some Words on this Species:

My 3 turtles have individual tastes for food and habits I have lizards too but 3 toed boxers are my #1 reptile pet, most active in morning they sleep pretty well the rest of the time is why they live to 100 i guess.
