Species:
Desert Pale Agama /Agama Pallida
Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:
Basic Middle Eastern Agamids
Sexing and Characteristics:
The most obvious characteristic of a Pale Agama are the darker blotches running along side of a white dorsal line and bands on the tail. Sometimes however it may be difficult to notice. Pale Agamas range in at about 7 inches, over half of it being the tail. They can come in different shades of brown, some examples being from a beach sand color to a dried dirt look.
Males, when excited or active can turn a deep blue color on the throat and on their sides. Females do not have this coloration of blue, but can have almost blue lines running down their throat when stressed.
Mostly Active During:
Day
Substrate and Water Needs:
For my Pale Agamas, I found sand is alright for them as long as you have the husbandry spot on. Always provide Slate or some form of a "rough" or hard object they can climb on to keep nails trim. I use Excavating clay and wood for this. I do provide a small dish of water for them. If you do, make sure it is shallow so they can stand in it. However, since they rarely drink out of it I recommend spraying water lightly on their heads so they can lap it up every other day.
Lighting and UVB:
UVB Is essential for Desert Pale Agamas. With out it, MBD will quickly take over.
Temperatures and Humidity:
Keep an ambient of 75-80 with a basking spot of 100-110. A UTH can be placed on the cool side if given enough sand that it is only warm to the touch.
As for Humidity, they like it dry. It doesnt hurt to soak them every now and then however.
Heating and Equipment:
I use the UVB bulb and a UTH for heat, additional ones can be used.
Caging Provided:
As stated previously, these are what I provide for my Agama. Please keep in mind that they are active and will try and climb anything they can. So provide a climbing area!
Diet:
Carnivorous
Description of Diet:
I feed mine strictly on crickets and mealworms. Never have they accepted vegetables.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
I supplement 1 out of every 5 insect I feed my agamas with ESU Carnivore Vitamin Spray. It has all the essential vitamins in it. Powdered version is acceptable.
Maintenance:
Desert Pale Agamas are relatively simple to keep. Just make sure you pick up stools when noticed.
Some Words on this Species:
Pale Agamas are an awesome smaller agama to work with. They remind me of a miniature Bearded Dragon on sugar. They have random sprint moments and just run all over the place. I would recommend them for the beginner and the experienced.
