Sexing and Characteristics:
Males have a bulge at the very start of the tail and often times have a more prominent crest, However, the bulge is what most clearly distinguishes the different sex.
Mostly Active During:
Night
Substrate and Water Needs:
Substrates for the Crested Gecko can be moss, coconut fiber, peat or paper towels are all acceptable. Keep in mind if you have a juvenile that they may ingest the substrate. Also the substrate must lock in humidity as cresties are originally from an Island called New Caledonia, known or its rain forest in the south pacific.
Lighting and UVB:
For the most part, Lighting in unnecessary however if your climate is particularly cold you may want to use something. The temperature of the environment should range between 73-80 degrees in the day time and around 65-75 degrees at night. Personally, I use a red night bulb to keep the temperature in this area because my house is cold at night. However, this really depends.
Temperatures and Humidity:
The temperature of the environment should range between 73-80 degrees in the day time and around 65-75 degrees at night. As far as humidity goes I typically keep my cages at around 70-80 percent humidity. Misting at LEAST twice a day (Once in the morning, once at night) is necessary to maintain this humidity, I also put a small water dish in the cage to help this.
Heating and Equipment:
Other heating is generally not necessary unless you live in a particularly cold climate.
Caging Provided:
Cresties are arboreal, so I recommend a minimum 20 gallon arboreal tank. For a hatchling, a 10 gallon tank is acceptable until they reach adulthood. Housing cresties together is acceptable, a larger tank is necessary in this case but be sure that only ONE male is housed with a group of females as males are Extremely territorial. Provide lots of leaves and foliage in order for cover spots. I also like to use cork bark as cover for them to climb, also this maintains humidity well.
Diet:
Omnivorous
Description of Diet:
I create my own gecko formula if you will using peach baby food and turkey with gravy baby food combined with a crested gecko formula as well. You can alternate with apricot baby food as well. 3 times a week I offer my geckos a few crickets to keep them active and hunting. The crickets are to be dusted to ensure the gecko gets the proper amount of calcium. Do NOT feed your gecko mealworms because they have a hard outer shell which the geckos soft jaws can not bite into. Cresties drink water off of the leaves and foliage in the tanks so be sure to thoroughly spray.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
Maintenance:
Crested Geckos are great pets and through proper care are a pleasant addition to a family. You can handle them but be careful as they have the ability to jump pretty far and can get injured. Otherwise, this species makes fun pets for any keeper, whether they be experienced or new to herps.
