SEXING: A male turtle will have thick long tail while a female has a skinnier tail.
CHARACTERISTICS: Turtles have a hard shell with somewhat webbed feet. They have no teeth, but they have a beak which is used for piercing the skin of its prey.
Mostly Active During:
Day
Substrate and Water Needs:
SUBSTRATES: I highly recommend SAND. gravel will work fine, but the turtle might eat it and die. if you want you don’t need anything in the bottom of the tank.
WATER: The water should have no chlorine of salt in it. If your water has that in it then you should get water conditioner from the pet store.
Lighting and UVB:
LIGHTING:provide a lot of lighting. you will need two lights; one for basking and another for the UVB.
UVB: you will need sufficient UV rays. use a UVB strip bulb to cover the entire length of the tank.
Temperatures and Humidity:
TEMP: basking temperatures should be in a range of 87-105. i recommend 90-100, because the warmer the turtles are the more healthy and active they are. water temperatures should be around 70-76. remember:THE WARMER THE BETTER
HUMIDITY: how humid it is doesn’t matter very much but try to keep it under 70% If its too humid their shell will rot.
Heating and Equipment:
HEATING: you will need just a normal house hold bulb for your heat lamp. you will need a water heater to heat your water.
EQUIPMENT: you will need very good filter for turtles. if the filter is rated for 30 gallons that filter will be able to filter ten gallons for turtles.
Caging Provided:
I have a 20gal tank for one baby (1.5 inches) turtle. I have UVB rays and a heat light. My basking area is 100 degrees. I have about6.5 inches of water for him to swim in. I have provided him with a zoo-med turtle dock.
Diet:
Omnivorous
Description of Diet:
Meat: crickets, mealworms, bloodworms, earth worms, freeze dried krill, and wax worms. (only feed them these rarely)
Plant: lettuce, tomato, carrot, cucumber, apple, strawberry. (feed this food about one a month)
Pellets: use pellets as your staple diet. i recommend the ZOO-MED BALANCED DIET.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
SUPPLEMENTS: optional. If you use them follow the instructions on the container.
Maintenance:
Once a month take out all the water and change the filter pads. put in clean water.
Once a week do a partial water change.
Some Words on this Species:
These are wonderful pet to care for and are fun to care for too, but they cost about $150+ a year and require a lot of work to keep happy and healthy. If you are up to the challenge,GREAT!!
Have fun=)
