Sexing and Characteristics:

Males will have to small bulges on either side of vent like a BB was shot under the skin

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

I use cypress mulch and or bark. Do not use anything that can stick together if it gets wet because if it gets stuck on the tegus toes it can prevent shed, cutting off circulation, and can cause loss of digits
Fairly big sized water bowl for soaking although they rarely soak

Lighting and UVB:

For babies have a uvb bulb and a full spectrum light
adults don’t need the uvb but do need basking light

Temperatures and Humidity:

Basking temperatures 110 -115 cooler side 83-87
Fairly high humidity mist weekly

Heating and Equipment:

Put under tank heating pads DO NOT USE HEAT ROCKS THEY CAN BURN YOUR TEGU!!!!!!!!!!!
Also use heat lamp

Caging Provided:

For a baby 30G. Is ok but will rapidly need bigger sized enclosure. 8X8X8 is preferred. Also need appropriate sized hide box with high humidity .

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Carnivorous. Tegus can eat hissing roaches,rodents,crickets,superworms,and locusts. Crickets Should be main food source when tegus are younger but as they grow they move up to larger rodents and some vegetables can be offered.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Use calcium powder such as miner-all or other supplements

Maintenance:

Takes a fair bit of time but after a while it gets to be routine.

Some Words on this Species:

Tegus are awesome animals to have but require a lot of responsibility and money$$. But once you get one of these lizards you will see how rewarding they really are. Good luck.
