Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:
Giant Hairy Desert Scorpion
Sexing and Characteristics:
N/A
Mostly Active During:
Night
Substrate and Water Needs:
Sand, rocks, gravel, dirt - water should always be provided in a dish, using a hermit crab sponge to retain water and provide a way for the scorpion to walk across the dish to prevent drowning.
Lighting and UVB:
Lighting/UVB light used 4-6 hours per day during regular "daylight" hours.
Temperatures and Humidity:
Temperatures should be between 75-85 degrees, depending upon the scorpion. We have had one that preferred temperatures around 90-95 degrees, but most prefer the 75-85 range. Humidity - you can mist the tank every other day with a spray bottle, or just make sure that the sponge/water dish remains full at all times. Substrate (sand or dirt) should be sprayed regularly to retain moisture for tunnel digging.
Heating and Equipment:
Heater can be used to maintain regular temperature (see above)
Caging Provided:
10 gallon tank with large gravel at the bottom to retain moisture, topped with wetted desert sand. A screened top to prevent escape attempts, water bowl with sponge, rocks for hiding under and basking as well as something to hide in (ours really like those hermit crab half coconut shells).
Diet:
Carnivorous
Description of Diet:
Crickets or meal worms - make sure that the crickets are not too big for the scorpion, otherwise he will just kill them and not eat them out of "fear". Also - feed one at a time, otherwise some crickets will "gang up on" the scorpion and attack.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
Dust crickets with supplements liberally.
Maintenance:

Some Words on this Species:
Scorpions need at least 5-6 inches deep of sand or soil for digging and tunneling. They also need regular light/UVB. Feeding of crickets should be twice weekly - or be determined upon how active your scorpion is (depends upon season). They do have "dormant" periods similar to hibernation during the colder months. This is when we keep the tank at about 75 degrees (in winter) so he can complete this cycle.
