 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

5 to 10 Years

Species:

Tokay Geckos

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

White Lined Gecko
Flying Gecko

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males have hemipenile bulges and are slightly smaller

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

Potting Soil, Cypress Mulch, Shredded Coconut fiber and other such reptile safe bedding. Never use ceder bedding as it cause respitory infections and their are chemicals in it which are harmful. Mist cage before you turn light off or if you have infer red bulbs you can mist any time of day.

Lighting and UVB:

Because they are nocturnal Tokay geckos do not like bright lights. Use of infer red bulbs are good and heating pads will also provide a good heat source. As well because they come out at night I have found that tokays don’t need floresent lighting for UVB but providing a small floresent light in the day doesn’t hurt as long as they have plently of places to hid from the light.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Temperatures in the high 70’s to low 80’s is best for tokay. Localized heating spots are also perfered. A high humidity in the 70 to 90 is best for these lizards.

Heating and Equipment:

Heat pads and Heat lamps can be used for these lizards but make sure that the heat pads are only a secondary source of heat as these lizards will not come to the cage floor for heat.

Caging Provided:

No less then a 30 gallon should be provided. Plants are not needed but can be used. Good sturdy branches and lots of hiding places are best. Males may fight with one another but females can be kept in small groups with a male.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Crickets, waxworms, mealworms, grasshoppers and sometimes pinkies. Pinkies should only be given sometimes and should never form the main diet of this lizard

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I have found that Miner-All made by sticky togue farms is a good supplement to use. I highly recommend it.

Maintenance:

Feed these lizards every 2 to 3 days. Clear their bedding every month and mist their cage every day.

Some Words on this Species:

Can become tame but is usally very aggressive to other lizards and keeper. I have kept a tame tokay before but all the rest where very aggressive and bite hard! Don’t buy this lizard thinking that you can tame it. If you want a lizard you can handle I would suggest a bearded dragon or blue tongue skink.
