 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Trine

Years Experience:

15 to 20 Years

Species:

Japanese Fire Bellied Newt

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

None.

Sexing and Characteristics:

Both sexes are the same size. Males, however, have broad paddle-like tails that frequently have solid spots and a tip that narrows abruptly. Female tails taper normally and their markings are usually identical to the rest of their bodies.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

Semi-large gravel is recomended for substrate. For mature adults, water depth can be anywhere from 4 inches to 1 foot deep. A completely dry surface should be provided for them. For this purpose you may use rocks, floating cork bark, etc. These items should be purchased at your pet store as items found in the wild may contain bacteria and other elements which are harmful to the newts.

Lighting and UVB:

Full spectrum lighting is not necessary for the Fire Belly. A heat lamp for basking should be provided as newts enjoy sunning.

Temperatures and Humidity:

They are comfortable with temperatures in the seventies.

Heating and Equipment:

A heat lamp is all that is required.

Caging Provided:

My newts are kept in 10-20 gallon tanks.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Newt pellets and brine shrimp are the staple diet. These can be obtained at pet stores.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Their diet can be supplemented with waxworms, bloodworms, mealworms, crickets and earthworms, the latter of which seems to be a favorite.

Maintenance:

In my experience, these are hardy newts that are somewhat resistant to water acidity. Even so, a filter is recommended. Preferably an underwater filter so they are not able to climb out.

Some Words on this Species:

Breeding Tips: During mating the male will fan his tail against his body once having sidled up to a female. You may see him circle her and try to get close. When a female is gravid, her belly swells noticably. When this happens, she will try to escape the tank if the male is still present. She prefers solitude when pregnant and while laying eggs. Plants must be provided for an egg laying surface. Fake plants are suitable but live plants are recommended.
