Years Experience:

1 to 2 Years

Species:

Garter Snake

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Ribbon Snake

Sexing and Characteristics:

Have to be probed to determine sex.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

I use reptile carpet as substrate but you can also use orchid bark. They have to have fresh water at all times in a bowl big enough to soak in.

Lighting and UVB:

No need for UV.

Temperatures and Humidity:

I keep one side of his tank at about 100F and the other at about 85F. He usually only basks for a few hours a day. For humidity, he just has a huge water bowl which I let evaporate through the day and refill it the next morning.

Heating and Equipment:

I use a heat lamp with a 100w bulb but you can also use heat pads.

Caging Provided:

A 10gallon tank with sliding screen lid. In it I have a piece of reptile carpet, a hide box, a small branch and a big water bowl.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

I feed him 6 goldfish every 4 days. I just dump them right in the water bowl and he hunts them down.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I haven’t had to use any.

Maintenance:

I replace the water daily and wash the carpet weekly.

Some Words on this Species:

They can be fun to watch but generally don’t like to be handled. Mine usually musks me or tries to bite me when I reach for him.
