Species:
Firebellied Toads
Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:
This species care sheet only covers Firebellied Toads.
Sexing and Characteristics:
It is difficult for most people to tell the difference between the male and female of this species, but certain characteristics, such as bumpier forearms are more likely the male of this species. One way to tell whether it is a male or female is also if one of the toads grabs another toad around the back, then it is a boy.
Mostly Active During:
Night
Substrate and Water Needs:
I use gravel as a substrate, but you can also use sand and moss. The water should be room temp. (between 68 and 75 degrees F) and declhorinated (obviously). Ummm... that’s about it.
Lighting and UVB:
They should have a regular daylight time between 12 and 14 hours a day and the light that they have should be flourescant, NOT incandescant.
Temperatures and Humidity:
Humidity doesn’t really seem nessacary to monitor, but temperature should be between 68 and 75 degrees F.
Heating and Equipment:
A filter can be used, but you don’t need it as long as you clean the tank frequently. You don’t need heating equipment either as long as you don’t live somewhere really cold, just remember to get thermometers, they’re important for monitoring temperature.
Caging Provided:
I got a huge plastic container at K-mart that was only 6 bucks and is bigger than 20 gallons, but a lot of people go out and get really expensive glass tanks. My container holds three toads but they say that I could have more than that in it. A ten gallon tank can have only two to three toads in it. Oh yeah I almost forgot... the tank should be mostly water but have a gravel incline and floating rocks or lily pads in it.
Diet:
Carnivorous
Description of Diet:
Bugs. Crickets mostly, but should have other things like earthworms, bloodworms, maybe a guppy once and a while, but NOT waxworms because they er.. back the toad up. 2-3 crickets every other day per a frog. They only can see their food if it moves so they require live crickets and worms and stuff probably have to be held on tongs and waved around.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
The crickets should be gutloaded (very easy to find stuff) and have a calcium powder sprinkled on them every other feeding for an adult toad, but for a baby toad they should have calcium supp. every feeding.
Maintenance:
Cleaning twice a month, changing half of water once a month. Very easy maintenance.
Some Words on this Species:
It is the most common petshop frog, but do not mix with other frogs!!!!!! Firebellied toads are poisonous to other frogs and their toxins will kill them. Remember to always wash your hands before and after touching and if you want more information go to www.allaboutfrogs.org . This website(not mine) is very informational on most species of frogs and toads.
