 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Green/Giant Anaconda

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

N/A

Sexing and Characteristics:

Females usually grow larger than males, which can reach lengths of 16+ feet and females can get 20+ feet, they can even get to lengths of 25-30+ feet. And think about what you are getting.

Mostly Active During:

Both

Substrate and Water Needs:

The green anaconda belongs to the class Boidae, so it is mostly found in the Amazon rainforests. This snake however, is the world’s heaviest snake, and probably the biggest. It spends a lot of time in lakes, ponds, and rivers. So its an aquatic snake. Its cage should be covered with some small tree bark. And more than 60% of the aquarium should be water so it can cruise around and soak and drink and swim. And also try to have some rocks, branches for exercise.

Lighting and UVB:

No special lighting is needed, but dim lights will be good at times.

Temperatures and Humidity:

The temperatures should be 85-90 F. At night, the temperature is better off at 80-85 F. The humidity should be between medium and high. If the habitat is not humid enough, the snake can have trouble shedding.

Heating and Equipment:

The heating should be provided by Spot-Lights, and provided just above a high point in the cage so the snake can bask under the light while resting on a rock or branch.

Caging Provided:

Even though I have never had a green anaconda, I would recommend a 90 Gallon tank at the start, so you don’t have to change it before 1.5 years. The snake will get big and heavy, so you better have good connections with custom cage and tank builders and you better live in a house with a very big backyard. THINK BEFORE YOU BUY THIS SNAKE, IT HAS A BAD BUT UNDESERVED REPUTATION FOR BITING PEOPLE AT TIMES.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

This anaconda usually eats Caimans, big mammals, and so on. But when captive, newborns should be fed mice or rats just 1.5-2 times the width of their head at the thickest part, and should be fed once every 6 days. Juveniles should be fed every 7 days, and adults should be fed every 9-10 days.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

You should take your animal to the vet first to get the recommended supplements.

Maintenance:

When handling the snake, be extra careful around children because they can swallow a 5’ tall child, and try not to let the snake loose in your backyard unless you are watching it, because local pets can be in danger, especially cats.

Some Words on this Species:

Take my advice and buy a red tail boa or a ball python before you buy a Green or even Yellow anaconda.
