 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Roxibabe267

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Leopard GEckos

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Various banded geckos and fat-tails

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males have hemipenal bulges and dark preanal pres by the vent. And the females usually have a smaller build

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

They will eagerly drink from a water bowl without a drip system. Substrate is hotly debated. Although I’ve never had a problem with it, and some geckos like to dig.

Lighting and UVB:

An incandesent light or basking light will provide heat and a day/night cycle. UVB isnt needed for leos are mostly nocturnal and are good at storing and using small amounts of calcium. Use supplements instead

Temperatures and Humidity:

A 90-95 deg F is a good basking place and 75-85 is a good temp gradient for leos. Fat tails like it a bit hotter and more humid. Some people prefer repti bark orver sand for fat tails. Depending on the region...most banded geckos of america like the same range as leos

Heating and Equipment:

UTH or incandesent heat lamps or basking lights make good heat sorces. NEVER use hot rocks....if you hold a leo, you can feel how soft and tender thier little bellies are. (same 4 banded and fat tail)

Caging Provided:

A 10 gallon tank is a good space for one adult gecko. Small banded geckos can be housed in a pair comfortably in 10 gallons. 20 gallons is good for three and so on. Branches and logs make good cage furniture for geckos and leos and fat tailds need humid hide boxes with moist vermiculite or mist paper towells. Mist the hide box daily.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Crickets ,mealworms, small moths ect. waxworms make good fattening treats for undely- skinny leos(as do mealworms) and waxworms shold be used occasionaly for a treat. The same goes for pinkie mice. Most banded geckos are too small for pinkies

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Use a multivitamin weekly and calcuim at every feeding for all ages.

Maintenance:

Mantinence is low...consisitng of feeding, removing fecal matter, changing sand , filling water dish and misting the hide box daily.

Some Words on this Species:

Leopard geckos are beautifull animals that become tame with little handling , have interesting behavior and easy breeding. They are truly the ULTIMATE begginer herps. The same with fat tails- but they tend to be shyer. Good luck!
