Sexing and Characteristics:

Females are generally larger than males. To determine accurately the sex of the animal you must have it probed by a vet or someone who is experienced and has probed snakes before.

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

Many different substrates can be used. Newspaper, cypress mulch, and aspen are the most commonly used substrates. Whatever you use make sure it is non toxic to reptile. Cedar or pine should not be used.

Lighting and UVB:

No special lighting is needed.

Temperatures and Humidity:

88-92 F on the basking spot, 78-82 F for the ambient temp, do not let temps fall below 75 F. Keep humidity in the 40-60% range.

Heating and Equipment:

There are many heating devices on the market, including heat lights, heat pads, heat tape, etc. Any of those can be used and work appropriately if used in the correct manner. Do NOT use heat rocks, these overheat easily and may cause burns.

Caging Provided:

Retics need a large cage as adults, most people use cages that are 6-8ft long. There are many cages available that you can buy, and you can build your own custom made enclosure. Hatchlings and juveniles can be housed in Rubbermaid containers.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Rodents, birds, and other small mammals.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

None is needed, but there are some products that can be used.

Maintenance:

Change water about every other day or more if needed. Spot clean as needed, and clean out entire cage periodically.

Some Words on this Species:

This species is not for the beginning herpeteculturist. Some experience with large constrictors is needed.
