 Care Sheet Submitted By:

St.anger

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Cranwells horned frog

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Ornate horned frog
Both spieces are commonly know as the pac man frog

Sexing and Characteristics:

Females are know too get much larger then the males. Females also do not make any noise, the males how ever do "bark" for females when there are sexually mature, some times while misting your frog a male will emit a call for a female. Mature males throat will turn brown and look like a little beard.

Mostly Active During:

Both

Substrate and Water Needs:

I uses Eco-earth and bed-a-beast, both are made out of compressed coconut fibers. you do not want too use any cedar as a substrate. You will also not want too use, bark chips, gravel or sand, as horned frogs are very greedy eaters and will ingest pieces of the substrate and it is not common for it too kill them. The use of sphagnum moss is also a good choice. For the water you will not want it too be deep, these frogs do not swim well and will drown, you only want the water too be at a depth of about there elbows when they are sunken down, and not above there nostrils. You will also have too treat the water with some thing too remove the chlorine and chloramine out of your tap water, and do the same for the water you use for misting your frog, don’t for get too use warm water.

Lighting and UVB:

The lighting is not all that important, but you don’t want too use incandescent bulbs as they will dry out your vivarium and your frog, if proper misting is not done. One Exo Terra Repti Glo 5.0 will provide plenty UVB for your frog.

Temperatures and Humidity:

The temperature for your frog, should be kept around 77- 82f in the day and a few degrees cooler during the night. horned frogs require high amounts of humidity aim for 70% and higher.

Heating and Equipment:

Heating can be provided by under tank heaters, or a infrared heat lamp, or a ceramic bulb, if you choose too use and light as a heat source, make sure your frog is kept from drying out and keep there substrate moist. If you are using an under tank heater place some astro turf or similar material over the bottom plate of glass, too prevent the frog from burning its self when it buries in the substrate.

Caging Provided:

I am keeping my cranwells horned frog in a 15gallon tank with two under tank heaters, one 20watts fluorescent bulb, 4" of Eco-earth and sphagnum moss and a large water dish.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

This is a list of foods that are good for your horned frogs.
Crickets, meal worms, king worms, earth worms, wax worms, wingless fruit flys, butter worms( very high in calcium),horn worms, spring tails, cockroaches, baby mice all the way up too full grown mice, fish, anoles and other small lizards, other frogs(non-toxic ones),and young freshly hatched chickens, just make sure you don’t feed too many wax worms, mice, fish, lizards and chickens too your frogs, use them more as a treat.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

The food you use should be dusted by one of the many vitamin supplements available to you. for young frogs use them maybe every 4 days and for adults every 2 weeks.

Maintenance:

These are easily frogs too care for, all you have too do is make sure there vivarium is kept clean, moist and heated. They are a hardy species but will parish if not cared for right.
a canopy is not needed as they will not jump out or climb out but the use of one will help keep the humidity up.

Some Words on this Species:

The Cranwells and the Ornate horned frog are not active frogs, most of there time will be spent half buried in there substrate waiting for pray too walk by. They will bite the hand that feeds them so watch out, these frogs have teeth on the roof of the mouth called vomerine teeth, as well as around the outside of the jaw. They use there teeth too hold onto prey not too chew it. these frogs will eat other horned frogs so it is recommended that you only keep one frog per vivarium or keep them in a large enclosure with frogs of the same size.
