Sub Category:

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

1 to 2 Years

Species:

Oriental fire bellied toad(Bombina orientalis

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

European fire bellied toads and yellow bellied toads

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males are usually more brightly colored and have thicker forearms the females are usually bigger than the males although it is quite hard to find exactly what sex they are.

Mostly Active During:

Both

Substrate and Water Needs:

Bark chips
stones(big enough to not fit in there mouths,if not it can cause death if swallowed)
You can have either half aquatic/half land or all land with a big water bowl for them to swim in changed daily.

Lighting and UVB:

I use an ordinary UVB bulb.
no basking bulbs there amphibians not reptiles

Temperatures and Humidity:

Oriental fire bellied toads prefer a temp of 68-77of(19-24oc)
no heat mat is required if kept in fairly warm room.
You use a hygrometer to measure humidity and i usually have it between 60%-80% humidity

Heating and Equipment:

No heat mat is needed really unless you live in VERY cold climates.

Caging Provided:

I provided my 2 oriental fire bellied toads(bombina orientlis) with a 30gal tank which is 18"wide x 15"deep x 18"high
As a rough guide line i go with about 4gal per toad/frog obviously the more room the better!

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

I feed my 2 fire bellied toads 8-10 medium sized brown field crickets every other day-(Mon-Wed-Fri-etc.)
Its best to dust the crickets every week or so with a good vitamin supplement 24hrs before feeding the crickets to the toads.
You should feed the crickets with things like potato, cucumber, bread, carrot etc. its been known that if you feed the crickets brightly colored foods its meant to help brighten the colors up in the toads.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

A good vitamin supplement applied to crickets once a week or so

Maintenance:

You obviously need to clean out any dropping(usually in the water!!)
Change the water daily if your using a big water dish instead of a half and half tank, clean the water in a half/half tank every few weeks I’m not 100% sure on keeping a semi aquatic tank(half/half tank) though.

Some Words on this Species:

This is a great beginners toad and a great toad for anyone really the’re low maintenance fun to watch!(diving on the crickets)
A Little warning before and after you’ve purchased the toads-they tend to change their coloration this is nothing to worry about it happens because of a number of things:
temperature change
change in environment
they’re getting older mature etc.
the food can get them to change
they must change!
and loads of other things!!

Another warning if you see them eating their skin don’t freak out!! toads shed their skin they then eat it which is good for them because its very nutritional!!

Good luck with your toads! any more questions ask me on the toads forum or e-mail me at-
