Species:
Betta Splendens
Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:
Forest Betta
Sexing and Characteristics:
In the commercial form of this species the males have much longer tails, but in wild or wild form bettas the male has longer pelvic fins.
Mostly Active During:
Day
Substrate and Water Needs:
These are a fresh water fish, they prefer a slow moving water, also don’t forget to dechlorinate your water, and ALWAYS fishless cycle your tank before adding fish
Lighting and UVB:
The betta fish itself doesn’t need much light, viewing lights is all or light from a window, thou they like soft aquatic plants, which do need plant lights
Temperatures and Humidity:
74-80 is best
Heating and Equipment:
Bettas need well filtered water, cause of their long fins they are prone to tail rot, but they also need slow/ gently moving water, they also need a water heater. Unlike most fish thou they don’t need a air pump, as betta’s are labyrinth fish, which pretty much means they can breath from the air, which is a one reason vases and small containers are unsuitable, cause they gives very little surface area for bettas, they also don’t allow for proper filtration or stress free water changes
Caging Provided:
Contrary to popular belief a betta isn’t suited to be kept in a vase or some tiny tank, anything under 5gallons is innappropriate, 10gallons or bigger is best, with a filter and heater, try not to use plastic plants, as the plastic can rip their delicate fins, silk or real plants are the best choice, bettas like to swim between the leafs of plants and other objects.
Diet:
Omnivorous
Description of Diet:
Not all betta foods are created equal, the best way to tell if its a good food is by the ingredients(if it don’t list them, don’t buy it) on all fish food, ingredients like wheat, rice, and other grain products should be low on the list or not on there at all, if it has them in the first 5 ingredients its a junk food, just to list a few good ones, hikari is good as well as OSI their could be others but they are what i use.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
Betta’s don’t need these
Maintenance:
Its best to provide a weekly gravel vacuuming and partial water change of the tank, about 25% is a good water change for a properly stocked tank, remember the old 1 inch of fish per gallon of water, only works for fish 2 inch or under as adults. And fish don’t grow to fit the size tank they are the same as reptiles they just stunt and die.
Some Words on this Species:
Contrary to popular belief they don’t live in dirty little mud puddles, they come from ponds, streams, rice patties(rice patties can be thousands of gallons) swamps, and other slow moving bodies of water, they usually live in more shallow water, but have lots of room in the other directions, often a males territory, is quite large, as they must be big enough for them to not see other males, provide female, shelter from predators, and food for the male and females, so please do just as much research for your fish as u do for your reptiles. and go to fish forums for your fish advise, not reptile forums, u wouldn’t go to a fish forum for your reptile advice would you?
