Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Water Dragons

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Green Water Dragons, Chinese Water Dragons, Asian Water Dragons. The Agamidae family.

Sexing and Characteristics:

Water Dragons grow to lenghts of 24-36 inches, where 2/3 of the length is its tail. Males are larger then females. They have a more developed crest, heavier jowls, and a hemipenal bulge.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

I use mulch because it holds moisture and creates humidity well. I use a large shallow sweater box for a water dish. I also use a couple of rocks for them to lay on in the water, plus if you have small dragons you may want a smaller water dish and a rock or stick so it can get in an out.

Lighting and UVB:

I use powersun uvb bulbs. I used to use a florescencent uvb bulb, but felt that the uvb/heat bulbs work well.

Temperatures and Humidity:

I keep a gradient heat of 75-90, higher when when they climb branches closer to the heat source.

Heating and Equipment:

For heating I use the uvb bulb or when I used my florescent uvb bulb, I used a house bulb. I use a heating mat under the tank. In winter time, because I live up north I use a stainless steel tank heater with heat protector on it to keep the water dragons from being burned.

Caging Provided:

A large cage is needed to provide a dry ground for half the cage and water for the other half. They also need branches and stuff to climb and to get in and out of the water easily.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

Water Dragons diets consist of crickets, mealworms, superworms, waxworms, earthworms, and if they are larger small pinkies or fuzzies. They will also comsume some vegitations such as collard greens, mustard greens, etc. Pretty much the same vegitable diet as an iguana.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Use calcium 3-4 times a week on crickets, mealworms, superworms, etc. Use Vitamins once a week placed on the insects.

Maintenance:

The water can get messed up easily, I suggest using a small filtering system, or maybe even a wetvac to get the dirty water out and replace it with new water. Don’t forget to dechlorinate the water.

Some Words on this Species:

Great pets to own.
