 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Red_skink

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Gargoyle Gecko

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Other species/morphs of gargoyle geckos

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males will have bulges by there vent, this is more noticeable when they are over 3 months old. Males will also have a row of pre-anal pores. Females will have non of these characteristics.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

I recommend that newspaper or paper toweling should be used for the floor of your enclosure. This is because it doesn’t cause gut impaction, is easy to clean and its extremely cheap. Live plants are a great decor to have, they provide good climbing and hiding places for your Gecko and also add colour to the enclosure. Water should be offered in a shallow water, and should be changed every day.

Lighting and UVB:

A UV bulb should be provided for at least 12 hours a day for these Geckos (don’t forget to change the UV bulb every 6-8 months as that is usually when they stop giving off their essential rays)

Temperatures and Humidity:

Daytime temperatures should reach 85 degrees, and an allowance of a 10 degree drop at night time. These Geckos do not really need high humidity, a daily mist is all that is required.

Heating and Equipment:

A 60 watt heat lamp can be used to heat the tank to its recommended heat level, and a heat Mat can be used to maintain heat in the Geckos enclosure. Plants hides, and a water bowl should all be provided.

Caging Provided:

These Geckos need a fairly large tank. As the they are arboreal lizards they need an enclosure that is high rather than an enclosure that is long.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

These Geckos eat alot of plant and fruit matter, rather than insects. Fruits such as Apricots, bananas, plums, etc, are all acceptable fruit items to feed to these Geckos. Apricots are highly recommended as they contain far more calcium than any of the other fruits mentioned. Crickets, meal worms, silkworms, and the occasional wax worm can all be offered to these Geckos. Baby Geckos should be fed more often that adults.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Calcium and Vitamin supplements should be used once a week. This is to help the prevention of MBD and soft bones.

Maintenance:

I have put all the recommended equipment that you will need to make your Gecko a long lived and healthy pet lizard below:
-At least a 20 gallon high tank (for an adult pair)
-A heat Mat
-A UV bulb
-Heat lamp with 60 watt bulb
-Plenty of hides
-Water bowl
-Plants (optional)

Some Words on this Species:

These Geckos have been known to live up to 20 years in captivity. These Geckos are more of a display lizard than a hand-able lizard, and I strongly recommend that you do not try to handle (if helped) your lizard as it can get easily stressed.
